Uses For Lemons

According to Pamela Allerdice author of Natural Cures A - Z the lemon has a long traditional use as a medicine. The lemon has antiseptic properties. The pulp can be used as a poultice to staunch bleeding and the juice makes an excellent gargle for a sore throat. The lemon also has a mild sedative action and will thus reduce fever, as well as promoting bile activity and therefore easing any indigestion.

Lemon is most famous for treating scurvy. Did you know even today, English sailors are required by law to drink a glass of lemon juice daily when at sea? Lemons are most important as a rich source of vitamin C and the bioflavinoids, which maintain the health of the skin's collagen content and strengthen the tiny capillaries seen near the surface of the skin. Allerdice recommends eating lemons for maximum natural health and beauty benefit as well as applying them to the skin and hair as a natural cosmetic. My daughter sprinkles sugar on them and eats lemons that way. :) :D

Lemons juice has great toning effects, mild deodorant properties and will provide a gentle exfoliant action. Allerdice says you can use in many ways -

Uses for Lemon Juice

Hair Rinse

In bath to whiten skin or bleach freckles

Antibacterial dandruff treatment

Toothe cleanser

As a lotion to soothe a sunburned nose or shoulders

Don't throw away any squeezed-out lemon halves. Turned inside out and dipped in sugar, you can use them mitt-style, on roughened ankles or elbows, before rinsing and applying a moisturizing cream.

If your face gets oily in the heat, squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a cup of water. Saturate cotton balls with the solution, chill and apply to nose and forehead for instant shine control.

To refine and even out a splotchy tan, blend the juice of 1 lemon with 1/4 cup whole milk. Spread liberally over tanned areas, leave for 20 minutes, then rinse well with cool water.

Mix lemon juice with cider vinegar, then stir through warm bath water and enjoy a refreshing and invigorating bath.

Cleanse your body of toxins and wake up skin - Squeeze fresh lemon juice into two of the eight glasses of water you drink a day.

Natural Cold Remedy With Lemon

Here is a great natural cure for cough, cold or flu symptoms. Lemon and honey are great soothers for sore throats and hot fluids open up nasal passages. Try this recipe for hot lemonade:

Hot Lemonade - Natural Cold, Cough or Flu Remedy

Take one big water glass. Into the bottom of it put 1 large spoonful of honey and 1 cinnamon stick. Slice half a lemon into thin slices and put those in, too. Now squeeze the remaining lemon half, and 1 more lemon, and put the juice of both into the glass. Fill with hot water, stir, and serve to the sick person with the glass wrapped in a napkin.

Lemon Plants

If you like the lemon scent, there are all kinds of plants you can grow that have it. Here is a list:

Lemongrass - Needs full sun and well draining moist soil. Can use in stir-fires, salsas, marinades, pork, poultry, lemonande and tea.

Lemon Verbena -Plant in a sunny well draining spot. The narrow rough-textured leaves carry an intense lemon flavor. Add chopped leaves to fruit salad, muffins, soft cheeses, stir-fry and vegetable dishes, pultry or fish, tea and desserts.

Lemon thyme - Plant in sun to bright shade in a well-draining border or container. Lavender-pink to white flowers appear in summer. Sprinkle fresh leaves on fish, chicken, corn, beans and potatoes.

Lemon-scented geraniums - Plant in a sunny well draining bed or container. Use the leaves to flavor sugar, cakes, salads or drinks.

  • Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux Remedy Drugs that reduce stomach acid are among the most frequently prescribed drugs in the United States. Although these drugs can be effective at relieving symptoms like heartburn and abdominal pain, they may have serious long-term side effects. There are many herbal remedies for acid reflux such as chamomile, meadowsweet, slippery elm, cancer bush, fennel, catnip, angelica root, gentian root, ginger root and other herbs, including aloe and chlorophyll. But many natural cure blogs say that the key to curing acid reflux naturally is in what are called “lifestyle changes.” Here are some suggested lifestyle changes you can make: Stop smoking – Smoking relaxes the sphincter muscles that normally prevent stomach acid from reaching the esophagus. It also dries out saliva in the mouth and throat, which normally would neutralize some of the stomach acid and begin the digestive process. Studies have found that smoking increases the risk of developing acid reflux disease, so if you don’t have it already and you smoke, you are much more likely to develop acid reflux. Reduce or eliminate alcohol consumption – Alcohol increases stomach acid. Alcohol also relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. • Symptoms of Indigestion

Symptoms of Acid Indigestion Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is a term used to describe one or more symptoms including a feeling of fullness during a meal, uncomfortable fullness after a meal, and burning or pain in the upper abdomen. Other, less frequent symptoms that may occur with indigestion are nausea and bloating—an unpleasant tightness in the stomach. Nausea and bloating could be due to causes other than indigestion. Indigestion is common in adults and can occur once in a while or as often as every day. It is estimated that up to 41% of the population have experienced indigestion at some time. Indigestion can be caused by a condition in the digestive tract such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, cancer, or abnormality of the pancreas or bile ducts. People who suffer from anxiety, depression or emotional issues may have an increased rate of indigestion as well. Also, the use of drugs can irritate the body’s system and it can increase the indigestion symptoms. Certain types of antibiotics, aspirin and painkillers, thyroid medicines, estrogen and oral contraceptives and steroids have indigestion as a side effect. Sometimes a person has indigestion for which a cause cannot be found. [...] Related posts: Peppermint Tea and IBS Peppermint Tea Stomach I have always know what a great... Me too. I especially love Meyer Lemons and I planted a Meyer Lemon tree in the yard this winter. I already have a couple of tiny lemons.

I use lemon juice to bleach the stains out of our regular tea jug. Instead of using bleach, I simply make a jug of lemonade. When it's gone.....so are the tea stains.

Hey Jmell, that is a great idea. I am going to try that with my coffee mug.

Lemon is so multi-purposes. For myself, I usually sip hot lemonade when I have a sore throat. It is the best remedy for me.
